Chiropractors treat headach and migraine pain

Chiropractic Care for Headaches

According to the American Chiropractic Association, 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches at least occasionally, and many of these people get headaches frequently. Most Americans pop a pain pill and carry on. Others try to ignore the pain and keep going.

New research preformed at the Duke University Evidence Based Practice Center found that the spinal manipulation provided by chiropractors resulted in almost immediate improvement in headache symptoms for people who had headaches originating in their necks. Chiropractic care also resulted in longer-lasting relief of tension headaches with fewer side effects than when patients are treated with commonly prescribed pain medications.

Modern jobs, which keep many people sitting at a desk in a fixed position, cause muscle strain, which can, in turn, lead to headaches from muscle tension. Some people in high pressure jobs tense up their shoulder muscles, set their jaws, and grit their teeth, creating additional muscle tension and promoting conditions that lead to a headache.

Some headaches can be brought on by or worsened by poor nutritional habits, lack of fluid, lack of sleep or over-exercising.

A chiropractor can treat your headache by performing spinal manipulation to alleviate the stress on your muscles and skeleton. Chiropractors can show you how to perform specific exercises and stretches to reduce muscle strain and reduce the risk of developing other headaches. They can also work with you on posture and ergonomics (your posture while on your job) to help keep your spine in alignment and your muscles loose. Lastly, a chiropractor can review your diet and advise you on changes you can make to reduce the risk of headaches.
