One of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care is for relief of back pain. Low back pain is a common side effect of modern life. Sedentary living, long hours at a desk or driving a car, and weakness in the muscles we use to maintain posture all contribute to back pain. For some people back pain develops gradually as the days' activities take their toll on the core muscles supporting the spine. Others experience a sudden onset of pain when they push weakened back muscles beyond their capabilities while performing some strenuous activity. Regardless of the cause, chiropractic is widely recognized as an effective treatment for both acute and chronic back pain. Spinal adjustment is the key form of chiropractic care.During an adjustment, chiropractors use their hands to apply controlled force to select spinal joints thereby increasing range of motion and reducing pain. Spinal adjustment can produce a cracking sound when the joint surfaces separate, but it does not have to in order to be effective. In some cases we supplement spinal manipulation with therapeutic massages, stretching exercises, and electrical muscle stimulation to help muscles that have been shortened and tensed during a spasm to relax and elongate. In addition to providing immediate relief, we will work with you to establish lifestyle habits that are gentler on your back in order to reduce the risk of additional discomfort and injury.
